Located in the south western region of Fairfield County, Stamford is the second most populated city and home of nine Fortune 500 Companies.  It is also the largest financial district outside of NYC.  Highlights of the city are the diversity, the performing arts, the entertainment and festivals, and the many restaurants, parks and beaches.  The express trains go non-stop into the city.

 The family or individual who considers a move to Stamford, CT quickly realizes that the city is a great location for many reasons. Located about an hour train ride from Grand Central Station, Stamford is a community of 130,000 people with plenty of reasons to brag.

What makes Norwalk attractive to people living and moving there?

  1. Urban & Livable – It has a more urban downtown area than other towns in Fairfield County. This makes it more walkable than other areas.
  2. Value – You get more home for the money compared to Darien, Greenwich or New Canaan which are nearby.

  4. Proximity to NY City – It is closer to New York City than most towns in the county, only 50 minutes on the express train to Grand Central Station.

Many other large corporations have divisions located in Stamford. This gives Stamford the largest financial district in the state outside New York City. Important sectors of its economy include information technology, healthcare, transportation and retail. There are a number of other large companies as well in addition to many smaller ones.

Easy Access and Transportation Options

Both I-95 and the Merritt Parkway traverse Stamford giving easy access to other areas of the state. Most of Stamford is no more than 10 or 11 minutes from a train station. There are 3 train stations and another one just over the line into New Canaan. The main station is an Amtrak station on the New Haven Line, also known as the Red Line. From the main station, there is also the branch New Canaan line which has 3 stations including the one just over the line into New Canaan.

In the downtown area there are many things in easy walking distance. There is the large Town Center Mall with many stores. There are also many restaurants and entertainment venues downtown.

Entertainment Options

For music, there is the Stamford Symphony Orchestra and the Connecticut Grand Opera. If you are looking for less formal music, there are many bars and nightclubs with live music and the town has weekly summer concerts in Columbus Park called Alive @ Five.

You have many options for theater and movies as well. The Stamford Center for the Arts includes the Palace Theatre and the Rich Forum. The Palace Theatre is a great place for live shows including plays, off-Broadway musicals, concerts and shows for children. The Rich Forum is a multi-purpose theater often used for NBC Universal TV show tapings.

Curtain Call is located in the Sterling Farms Theatre Complex and has plays and other entertainment. The Avon Theatre Film Center, a two-screen nonprofit movie house, focuses on indie movies and documentaries. There are two Bow Tie Cinemas with multiple screens showing first run movies.

Museums & Sites of Interest

Stamford Museum and Nature Center – The museum sits on 118 acres on the grounds of the Bendel Mansion. Built in the late 1920s, it contains contemporary art exhibitions and the natural history of New England. Children will glimpse what life was like then as they visit a 10-acre farm, celebrating New England’s rural heritage. The Overbrook Nature Center has interactive wildlife displays and is home to trails that roll through 80 acres of parkland. Don’t miss the otter ponds.

Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens – This living classroom holds some 3,500 plants in 12 different gardens. Most of what you will see has been collected from New England. Many of the items were planted more than a century ago.

There is also the First Presbyterian Church, a modernist masterpiece and the Philip Johnson Glass House designed by the renowned architect as a weekend retreat. There are also art galleries

Parks and Recreation

There are too many parks and beaches to list here. There are some small community parks but many large parks with hiking trails as well. Plus, since Stamford is on the coast, there are a number of parks that have beaches. Many of the parks have baseball fields, soccer fields and tennis courts.

In addition, there are a number of marinas and docks where there are opportunities to keep a power boat or a sail boat. Or you could launch a kayak or go windsurfing.

If you like to golf, there are 3 golf courses in Stamford. Two are public and one is private. Plus, there are many others nearby.

Near downtown in the Cove neighborhood is Chelsea Piers, a huge sports and entertainment complex.

Diverse Culture

Stamford is one of the most diverse communities in Connecticut. Many people enjoy being able to experience a range of cultures. And they particularly like the many excellent restaurants that have a wide variety of cuisines.

Education

Stamford provides numerous choices for education. It hosts higher learning at Norwalk Community College, 5,000 students, and U Conn-Stamford, 2,000 students. In secondary education, the city has three public high schools and 16 private schools including college preparatory, Hebrew, Christian and Catholic schools.
