Fairfield History

Originally known as Unquowa, Fairfield was one of two first settlements in the new Connecticut Colony in the 1600s. It was later divided into several towns and suffered great loss due to fire during the Revolutionary War. Population booms were recorded after World War II and, more recently, in the 1950s when the Connecticut Turnpike was completed. It has been voted as one of the safest and overall best places to live in the United States. One of its residents, Roger Sherman, was one of only six men who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.

Transportation

Easy road access from I-95, the Merritt Parkway, Kings Highway 1 serve the busy east-west routes to the bordering towns of Westport and Bridgeport. The Amtrak rail service has 3 stops offering walking distance to nightlife, dining, and shops.

The Connecticut Audubon Society Bird Craft Museum – The museum provides a look at species native to the area leading to the main feature of six acres housing rescued and protected birds in a beautiful garden setting. The waterfront offers two public beaches, Jennings and Penfield Beach, and three beaches, Southport, Sasco, and South Pine Creek, open to residents only during high season. Jennings Beach offers an outdoor skate park and the large south Benson Marina. Ye Yacht Yard at Southport Beach is a smaller marina with boat launching services.
