History

Greenwich also aligns with worthy causes with the Greenwich International Film Festival dedicated to showcasing socially conscious issues through film, and conservation at the Mianus River and Park, the Montgomery Pinetum, and bird sanctuaries on Calf Island and Great Captain Island.

 Transportation

Four exits serve Greenwich from Interstate 95. Boston Road (Route1) provides an alternate east-west route through the town. Many neighborhoods also have their own train stations with express routes to NYC. Air travel is offered at Westchester County Airport in the Back Country district and only a 35-minute drive to LaGuardia in New York State.

Employment

A variety of careers are available in medicine, education, and business with a focus on hedge funds and financial firms. Several large firms call Greenwich home. Easy access by the train or the highway into New York or to Stamford makes commuting an attractive option also.

 Notable Attractions

Greenwich Polo Club – Established in 1981 the club quickly became recognized around the world for top horses and riders. Sunday matches are offered throughout the summer.

Several museums and historical homes preserve the history of the town at Bush Holley House, Bruce Museum Seaside Center, and Putnam Cottage, known for its role in the American Revolution.

Montgomery Pinetum – Originally an estate with a focus on horticulture, the Pinetum offers one of the largest collections of pine species, as well as education gardens, walking trails, and picnic areas lush with trees, flowers, and shrubs. The Mildred Bedard Caldwell Wildlife Sanctuary borders the grounds.

 Entertainment

The roots of an artist’s colony in the Cos Cob area hosted some notable impressionists and have continued the spirit of the arts. Several galleries feature local artists and art history is shared at several museums.

The arts extend into other mediums with the Greenwich International Film Festival hosting thousands of visitors each year showcasing socially conscious films. The Greenwich Symphony Orchestra and the Greenwich Choral Society provide world-class musical performances throughout the year.

The Capitol Theater has hosted live theater, private events, screened films, and, once a rock and roll venue in the 1970s, has recently rebirthed rock performances.

 Parks and Recreation

Whether it’s rolling hills and inland lakes, sports, or beach life there is always outdoor adventure available in Greenwich.
