Darien, CT in Greater Detail

A Welcoming City with Many Amenities

Many couples and individuals have earned success in other cities, often in New York City, but decide they want more open spaces and a comfortable home. They are confident they can buy some nice things, but what they would really like is a pleasant well-rounded lifestyle.

Many people have been surprised to find all of these things in Darien, CT. It has been a city where newcomers have been able to connect quickly with people. New York Times writer Jill P. Capuzzo discovered that many newcomers found Darien surprisingly welcoming. Josh Peschko and his wife Kristy purchased a home for just under one million dollars in 2016 and have embraced the communal atmosphere of their new neighborhood. Through the YMCA’s Newcomers Club, the Peschkos attended several dinners at the homes of other new arrivals. Like many people, the Peschkos were attracted to the highly regarded school system, the town’s scenic location on the Long Island Sound and its active arts and social cultures.

It is not uncommon for people to move to the area not knowing a soul. They put their kids in youth soccer at four or take part in other activities and make lifelong friends.

Making new friends is just one of the perks of this stunning community located less than an hour by train from New York. New residents find a wide range of desirable housing, including waterfront and golf course locations. Darien hosts local and national equestrian competitions has two beaches and is the home to golf courses and tennis clubs.

Updated downtown

Darien has recently given the downtown an update. Developers at Baywater Properties plan to add apartments, nearly 80,000 feet of office space, 32 stores and seven restaurants. The theme of the development is to combine residential, retail and recreation.

David Genovese, of Baywater Properties, said, “In an old New England town like this, it’s very rare that you can create a critical mass that allows you to rethink the whole downtown experience,” he said. He believes that creating public spaces where people can interact will enhance their appreciation of the community.

Transportation. I-95 runs through Darien and the Merritt Parkway is minutes away from the north edge of the town. There are also two train stations, Noroton Heights and Darien. Express trains get to NY City in under an hour and run frequently.

Schools. When considering a move to Darien, parents want to be confident that their children will receive a good education. Niche.com rates schools across the country and it gave Darien impressive scores.
